NJ Driver Prep is a free, interactive practice test for the New Jersey MVC permit (knowledge) test. It is a gift to every new New Jersey driver — no signup, no account, and no cost.
The New Jersey MVC knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 40 correctly to pass — a score of 80%. You can miss no more than 10 questions. There is no time limit, and every question comes from the New Jersey Driver Manual.
Right-of-way, speed limits, the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, Kyleigh's Law decal requirements, DWI and zero-tolerance alcohol laws, the Move Over law, school bus rules, and New Jersey-specific maneuvers like jughandles. The default speed limit in residential and business districts is 25 mph where none is posted.
The shapes, colors, and meanings of signs: the octagon (stop), downward triangle (yield), yellow diamond (warning), pentagon (school zone), orange diamond (construction), green rectangle (guide/directions), and white rectangle (regulatory laws you must obey).
The three-second following distance rule, skid and shoulder-drift recovery, the wipers-on/headlights-on law, driving in fog and rain, proper steering hand position, blind-spot checks before lane changes, and right-of-way at four-way stops.
Under New Jersey's Graduated Driver License program, drivers under 21 with a permit or probationary license may not drive between 11:01 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., may have only one additional passenger unless a parent or guardian is present, may not use any handheld or hands-free phone, and must display red reflective decals on the front and rear license plates under Kyleigh's Law. A driver under 21 with a BAC of 0.01% or higher faces a 30 to 90 day license suspension.
You can miss up to 10 of the 50 questions. You need 40 correct (80%) to pass.
